This week, students will read and analyze the elements of informative essays. Students will then apply these elements within their writing by writing an informative essay. They will also determine and correct sentence fragments. Furthermore, students will complete an assessment over workshop #1. Students will be assessed over the following topics: central idea, relevant details, fragments, key vocabulary, and elements of a story. Students will receive a review before completing the assessment.
Students will begin part two of Workshop #1, "At First Sight". Throughout the second portion of the workshop, students will study new academic and content vocabulary. They will be assessed over the new vocabulary Friday, September 13th. Students will also determine and analyze the setting, character, plot, and theme in a novel excerpt.
Furthermore, students will analyze how to use information from labels that appear on images and diagrams to reach a deeper understanding of an informational text. They will analyze how graphics, labels, and captions fit into a text and add to the overall ideas by reading "The Cute Factor". This article will allow students to determine what makes babies cute and how the “cute response” exists in places around the world. They will also learn how people relate to their favorite animals. This week, students will continue to analyze the elements of informational writing. Students will publish their informative paragraphs. In addition, students will complete the interim checkpoint where they will be assessed for skills covered throughout the first portion of the workshop. Central idea, supporting details, nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and vocabulary are concepts that will be covered on the checkpoint. Furthermore, reading logs will be checked Friday, September 6th.
This week, students will read and analyze how human memory works. They will engage in activities that show eyewitness testimony isn't always reliable. Students will also draft an informative paragraph, which summarizes an article throughout the first workshop. They will state a main idea and cite evidence to support their analysis. Students will also analyze a text to determine the function of nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs.
Last week, students previewed the first workshop, "At First Sight". Students were introduced to the world of illusion, as expert magicians reveal the tricks of their trade in the Anchor Video. This week, students will preview the first workshop, "At First Sight". Students were also introduced to content-area vocabulary that will be studied throughout the workshop. Students will be administered a vocabulary assessment over these terms, Friday, August 23rd.

This week, students will have the opportunity to read and analyze READ 180 success stories. After reading the experiences of other students that have taken READ 180, students will reflect and share their personal challenges, inspirations, and dreams. They will create a profile to share their story. Last week, students were given the opportunity to select a book to read. Students are expected to reflect daily using their reading logs that will be checked biweekly.

READ 180 is an interactive, technology-based reading program that is designed to enhance students' fluency and comprehension skills. Instruction is delivered in four stages to enhance students' learning such as whole group, computer-based learning, small group, and independent workshop. Over the next few days, students will receive an overview of READ 180. They will engage in teambuilding activities in order to become familiar with the READ 180 rituals and routines. The Reading Inventory will be administered Tuesday, August 6th. This assessment will measure the students' lexile. Furthermore, students are expected to have the required supplies below. *Folder/ Binder *Dividers *Notebook Paper *Pens/Pencils This week, we will complete Workshop #2, and students will publish their literary analysis. Students will also complete the End of Workshop Assessment, Tuesday, April 30th. The students will be assessed over the following concepts: prefixes, context clues, figurative language, and elements of a story. Furthermore, students will receive an overview of Workshop, #3, Money Matters.
The Reading Inventory will be administered Monday, April 22nd. This assessment will measure students' lexile. Furthermore, students will analyze a literary analysis. They will also compare and contrast two characters discussed in the workshop to write a literary analysis. Students will focus on how each character relates to their cultures. Reading logs will be checked Friday, April 26th. Students are also expected to complete another Reading Counts quiz by Tuesday, April 30th.
This week, students will continue to use context clues to acquire unfamiliar vocabulary. Students will determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in an essay, including figurative language such as similes. Furthermore, students will continue to analyze how an author uses literary elements to develop a story.
